How the Travel Nurse Needs to Recognize and Deal With Abuse and Neglect of the Elderly

Never before in the history of this country have there been so many middle-aged and young old (age 65-75) adult children having to care for their parents. The United States Bureau of the Census report that by the year 2012, half of our elderly population will be greater than 75 years of age. Moreover, the 85 and over group is growing particularly rapidly, up 191 from 2000. With the ever-increasing age of dependent adults, there is unfortunately a direct increase in abuse and neglect.

More discouraging, the actual increase of elder abuse is the low incident of reporting the abuse by Health care Professionals. A number of studies have grievously demonstrated that trained hospital medical personnel routinely have failed to recognized and report abuse of the elderly, even through, in retrospect, significant signs and symptoms were obviously present. Elder abuse investigators, noted that the reporting of elder abuse is at the stage where child abuse was 30 years ago, unreported with a substantial amount of data missing. What is required is precision training of all medical personnel to identify appropriately and intervenee immediately to prevent further violence and maltreatment from occurring.

The Travel Nurse has significant responsibility in learning all signs and symptoms of abuse and neglect to adults since the average patient is approximately 52 years of age. Today's economy is dismal, that is a fact. Unemployment in the US as of mid-2012 is give or take 9%. Compare that to before the financial collapse of late 2008 when the average unemployment rate was around 5%, and we can see why so many youth are pessimistic about their future job prospects.
