What Is a Critical Care Transport Nursing Job?

A critical care transport nursing job requires extensive knowledge and experience. The main focus of a nurse in this job is to take care of the wounded patient. Additionally, a critical care transport nurse also assesses the needs of the victim while he is being transferred from a scene of the accident to the hospital.

Since this job requires the nurse to be responsible for the patient during transport, and to handle any emergency that may arrise along the way, it does put the nurse in a highly demanding and time sensitive place, especially when the patient presents a risk of death . This can often lead to the nurse feeling overwhelmed and stressed. That's the main reason why critical care transport nurses requires various personal qualities. They not only need the requisite qualifications, but also need to be quick on their feet with good mental and physical reflexes to help them cope with any emergencies.

Most aspirants find that a job in this area of transportation nursing can be considered one of the most interesting and well-paying jobs in this field, available to those starting their education to pursue a nursing degree. To make headway in this area, however, it will help to not only have a nursing degree, but also other specializations in other health care skills.

A job as a critical care transport nurse boasts of being one of the top paying healthcare jobs in the United States, and also in other developed countries like Australia, Canada or UK. Compared to physician assistants who make $ 82,000 a year, and physical therapists that may reach $ 75,000 annually, on an average a nurse gets paid $ 67,000 a year, and an RN can even make more.

A critical care transport nurse has an option to be specialized in many other sub-categories, like a specialization as a flight nurse. This explains why nurses in this branch of nursing have many more choices for career diversification and growth, and the possibility to make an even more lucrative nursing salary.

There are some nursing schools that offer complete transport training training programs, but to be accepted to these programs nurses need to have at least 2 years of nursing experience. These programs have courses that offer nurses an increased chance of success in getting jobs in this highly competitive and demanding field. Most of these courses include basic trauma life support, a trauma nurse core course, basic and advanced cardiac life support, critical incident stress debriefing and an intensive / critical care core course.

In summary, being a critical care transport nurse is not an easy job and is not for the fault-hearted; in fact, the necessary education and experience can take years to complete. That said, it is definitely a career worth considering, because being a critical care transport nurse is not only a financially rewarding experience but a very fulfilling one as well.

RN To BSN – Is It Worth It?

I have been a nurse for a few years. I graduated from a community college with an associate degree in nursing, and have noticed that many of my colleges have returned to school to obtain a bachelor's degree in nursing. This piece will discuss my thoughts and what I discovered about continuing on for an ADN to a BSN.

What would be the point of returning to school to obtain a BSN if you are not going to make more money? The fact is that getting a BSN may not increase your income. If you are working now as a bedside nurse and you want to stay that way, you will probably receive little or no pay increase for getting your BSN. But, if you hope to move away from the bedside, many better paying positions will be available to you with a BSN. Additionally, if you would like to move to a management position, a bachelor's in nursing would be a prerequisite.

These positions may even pay less than being a travel nurse or an agency nurse. More than likely, you can earn the most amount of money with or without a BSN if you are flexible and if you will work where and when others are not willing to work. For instance, I know of a hospital that pays their agency nurses time and a half when they are shorthanded, since nobody wants to work at that particular hospital. And, keep in mind the agency nurse and travelers are expecting more than the core staff already.

If money is the only reason, then a BSN may not be worth it, but if you want more job opportunities, or if you want to have less direct patient responsibilities or an advanced degree, then a Bachelor's degree would be worth it.

The length of time it takes to finish a bachelor's in nursing depends a lot on the school and the amount of classes you have already taken. Generally, it takes 16 months to 24 months to finish a program. A lot of programs are now and can be completed as you keep on working. But, do not plan on having much of a social life, since you will be spending a lot of your time studying for exams and writing papers. The amount of time it takes to complete a program is something you can use to make a comparison between different schools.

When I speak with fellow nurses regarding their switch from RN to BSN, they all have common criticisms. At the top of that list of gripes is having to post reviews in a virtual classroom online. That is bringing the worst part of traditional, in-person schooling and taking it into the online community. It is not enough to be competent at what you do, write your papers, know your material and perform well on exams, you also have to participate in online discussions, reading the inane remarks of others and having to write your own irrelevant feedback. Frequently, you must comment on a certain number of items or you will fail.

The other criticism I hear about often from individuals who have finished the bachelor's in nursing program is that it has not altered the way in which they practice. They think that the majority of it was an exercise in academia that is pretty much worthless in the real world. Many times they have to write papers on cultural considerations and other minorities that a nurse could typically sum up as saying that we need to respect the beliefs and traditions of others.

The last criticism is the amount of time spent writing papers and the way it is preventing them from being with their families. That is more than likely the case for any student going back to school, but it is something to remember.

How the Travel Nurse Must Recognize the Signs and Symptoms of Physical Abuse to Elder Patients

As I have mentioned in previous articles, travel nurses are not well trained in recognizing older abuse. Even though most states require courses on child abuse, no such course is required on elder abuse. Nurses also do not contribute bruises, broken bones and other physical injuries as abusive, but attribute them to a higher incidence of elderly people tripping and falling. Thus, the caretaker who commits physical violence, and states that the patient had fallen, is likely to be believed. As well, many abused elders suffer from dementia, Alzheimer and other mental deficiency entities which prevent them from telling how they obtained their injuries. In negligible cases without the victim is extremely dehydrated or malnourished, the Travel Nurse will not attribute the deteriorating condition of the patient as neglect.

A comprehensive thesis of elder abuse has been compiled by Mary Jo Quinn, RN, MA and Susan Tomita, MSW. They organized maltreatment into three categories: physical abuse, failure to thrive, and self neglect. Their studies will be cited in how to recognized, document and report elder abuse.

Physical abuse must be recorded by utilizing a sketch sheet to demonstrate the anatomical area of the assault. Accompanying photographs must be taken for documentation. These conditions are not in themselves indicative of alleged abuse, but are signs and symptoms that must be explored to rule out abuse.

In an assessment, one must note bruises and hematomas. One must note the lesions distribution over the body. Note if bruises are over bony prominences (elbow, knee, etc.), which are more indicative of a fall, versus inner arms and thighs, which are consistent with abuse. Do the bruises resemble the shape of an object or a thumb / palm / finger print? Note for the presence of old and new bruise. Multiple discolorations in multiple areas are indicative of repeated, systemic abuse. Are the injuries in different stages of resolution? Look for burns; are they unusual in location? Note rope burns to the wrist, ankles or thighs, or mouth gag mark. These are consistent with forcible restraints. Contracture of the musculature may indicate confinement for long periods of time. Assess the ambulatory state, in some incidences; poor ambulation in a capable adult may suggest sexual assault.

Documentation of the physical abuse must record the size, shape and location of the injury. Note the stages of the discoloration, take photographs of the injury. Finally, have an independent source sign the photographs and sketch allegations of abuse to be submitted to state authorities.

That's one of the reasons I want to switch to a recession-proof industry that will need workers no matter what the external economic conditions happen to be. After giving this a lot of thought, I've decided to look into nursing carers.

Since nursing careers are perfect for those who like to help people and who want a challenging, interesting job that presents something new every single day, I can totally envision myself in this kind of position. I also like the fact that nurses and other health care professionals enjoy top salies and compensation packages, because obviously I want to be able to have a comfortable lifestyle away from the job. Plus, nursing careers offer excellent growth potential, which means I can move up through the ranks after demonstrating my competency.

Of course, nursing careers are not the kind of thing you can just jump into on a whim. It takes years of schooling and formal training in order to receive the right qualifications and certificates. Fortunately, there are many schools all over the country that offer weekend and online health care courses leading to full LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) or RN (Registered Nurse) degrees. This means I can keep my current job while taking classes towards these different nursing careers, giving me some much-needed security as I prepare to change my life. Being able to continue working at my present company will also allow me to get through school with minimal debt and loans, and enable me to pad my resume as well. Then after I graduate, I'll have a leg up on the competition when it comes to finding a job.

Speaking of finding a job, I've learned that most schools that offer health care degrees also provide post-graduation placement assistance. So by going to the right school and making the right connections, I'll have the inside track to the most coveted nursing careers out there, and will not have to pound the pavement for months like other recent grads. And even if I do not use my school's placement assistance, I can just scan websites that post ads for nursing careers and submit my credentials to any hospital or health care organization that looks worthwhile.
