Why Babies Must Take Breast Milk?

National Demographic Health Survey (NDHS) [1] reports in Nigeria showed that in 2013 the rate of exclusive breastfeeding-feeding has dropped to 17%, this is one of the worst rates in the world by all standards, according to the report only 9 % of nursing mothers in Abuja breast-fed their babies for the first 6 months as advised by doctors.

Researchers in the US [2] have discovered that $ 13 million could have saved each year if 90% of mothers exclusively breast-feed their babies for the first 6 months of life. For every 1,000 babies not breast-fed, there will be an approximately 2,033 physician visits, 212 days in the hospital and 609 prescriptions by the physician. These figures would seem to suggest that if breast-feeding did take place exclusively for the first six months of a newborn's life then families all over the world could make huge savings through the child's lifetime.

The question on our mind is what is so important about breast-feeding? Since the beginning of time many authors and researchers have laid claim to the importance of exclusive breastfeeding-feeding and how it affects child and mother mortality. An expert pediatric Dr. Lanre Phillips referring to an article in an American Medical Journal [3] asserted that adults who were breast-fed 6-9 months had a higher IQs than those who were breast-fed for two-three weeks less. Biologically, breast milk contains everything your baby needs, to grow and develop optimally; you do not need to be an expert to know that breast-feeding is important for babies as there is simply no better food for new-borns.

A baby's stomach at birth is about the size of an adult thumb, it can only take between 12-20mls of feed at a time. Babies require 600ml-1000ml breast milk daily, this figure helps the baby to gain weight and develop organs. Besides the fact that continuous breastfeeding-feeding helps with bonding, breast milk is completely and easily digested leaving little or no residue. Dr. Phillips clearly stated that a mother's breast milk can protect and stimulate the development of a baby's central nervous system.
Breast milk contains a long chain of polyunsaturated acids, which is not present in infant formula of cow milk. Breast-feeding should be encouraged in all societies; all over the world. It is meant to be natural and instinctive, as babies who are exclusively breast-fed for the first 6 months are 14 times likely to survive the first 6 months of their life than non-breast-fed babies (UNICEF) [4].

Breast-feeding your new-born could also reduce the risk of new-born deaths by 45% [5] as well as adding so many other benefits. Our babies need all they can get to survive, so it is instructive to know that breast-feeding is part of those needs and as a mother you must give all you can.

5 Tips to Help You Survive and Get Through Nursing School

You went through the pre-requisites, application process and have been accepted to a nursing program. Congratulation !! However just so you know it is just the beginning of another long journey filled with pain and struggle. To help you survive here are 5 commands that could help you along the way.

1. Be ready to spend a lot of time studying.

There is a trend out there saying that nursing school is easy. This rumor has probably been spread by people who actually never set a foot in a registered nursing program. In fact you will need to spend a great deal of your expected time looking at books, studying for tests, writing papers, care plans or at clinical rotations. You will have to cut down drastically your social time if you want to succeed in nursing school.

2. Stay away from the drama.

Nursing school is already stressful enough academically that there is really no need to add some more stress because of classmates. A lot of women together makes for a very “dramagenic” environment. I have seen people dropping out of nursing school because they could not handle some fellow students. This being said do not necessarily isolate yourself. Oftentimes relationships made in nursing school last 5 minutes past the pinning ceremony. However you might also meet lifelong friends so be open to friendship because your class mates are the only ones who know what you are going through. Now just remember that a social life is by no means the main purpose of you coming to class every day. Just keep in mind that nursing school is place to learn.

3. Get enough sleep.

Staying up late one night will ruin your next day of class or clinical. You may be able to make it up drinking loads of coffee or some energy drink but just so you know fat adds adds up and soon enough you will turn into a zombie in scrubs.

4. Know when to refresh your mind.

You will be very busy that is a given. But you will also need to balance it out with some fun time. You do not have to be miserable to succeed you just need to learn how to optimize your time between studying and some extra activities. It will only make you a better student.

5. Last minute cramming will not work.

Would you eat in a day as much as you usually eat in a week? None in their right mind would do that and if they would they would be in trouble. The same principle applies to retaining knowledge. Learning on a regular basis will prove much easier and more effective on the long row. You might be able to get away with it a few times but be sure it will hurt you as the material piles up.

Lastly learn that a bad grade is not the end of the world. Whether bad for you is a B or a D chances are you will get one of these grades at some point while in nursing school. It may also happen that you end up failing a class and have to retake it. It may even occur that unfortunately you fail nursing school and are kicked out. Then you will hear the know-it-all type of people serve their “maybe you were not cut for it” type of speech. If such things were true people who fail the driving test would be deemed as “not cut for driving” and be doomed to ride a bicycle or the bus until the day they die. But fortunately people retake it as many times as it takes until they pass and become as good drivers as those who passed on the first try. Nursing school is the same way if you want it so bad just keep trying harder until you succeed because you can do it. And do not let anyone tell you otherwise.

What Is the Difference Between Enrolled and Registered Nurses in Australia?

There are two categories of nurses who are registered to practice in Australia- the Enrolled Nurses (EN) and the Registered Nurses (RN). Registered Nurses have satisfactorily completed a degree course in Nursing, while Enrolled Nurses are certificate / diploma trained. RNs are called Division I Nurses, while Enrolled Nurses are Division II nurses. Both of them work as a part of a health care team, and work at primary, secondary and tertiary levels of healthcare.

To become an EN, you are required to study full time for 12 to 18 months, through a state or a private training provider for a course leading to a Diploma or Certificate in EN. To become a Registered Nurse in Australia, you will undertake a course of study at a University to obtain a Bachelor of Nursing certification. InAustralia, both RNs and ENs are employed in general practices, and form an integral part of the healthcare team.
